Celebrated journalist Sydney J. Harris said that “The two words ‘information’ and ‘communication’ are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through.”  Despite the array of challenges that we face, Technical Communicators must remain focused on a primary goal of getting through. The technological aspects of the Technical Communication profession continue to evolve. Content Management Systems, social media, distance learning, mobile devices and other considerations heavily influence daily task documentation tasks. However, there are fundamental best practices that should be implemented regardless of your specialization along the Technical Communication spectrum. On Tuesday, January 20th, award-winning member, Associate Fellow and former STC Atlanta president, Chip Jones, presented his perspective about the essential elements of Technical Communication. The meeting included excellent discussion as new and seasoned writers relayed their concerns, insights and experiences regarding Chip’s Essential Elements of Technical Communication slides.
