Knowledge Management
Chapter Meeting: October 21st
By George F. HayHoe
Summary of Presentation
This session will explore the basic concepts and methods of knowledge management, concentrating on organizing and leveraging communities of practice, creating organization “yellow pages,” and implementing best practices systems. It will help participants understand that knowledge management is a vital means of preserving and increasing intellectual capital, not a management fad. In particular, it will demonstrate that knowledge management is an ideal means for technical communicators to add significant value to their organizations by ensuring that expertise is not lost when employees retire or change jobs, and to build morale within their organizations by revealing the capabilities of the workforce.
George F. Hayhoe
George F. Hayhoe is professor of technical communication at Mercer University. A fellow of the Society for Technical Communication, he edited its journal, Technical Communication, from 1996 to 2008. He is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the IEEE Professional Communication Society, and is a past president of that society. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of South Carolina. His professional interests include product and document usability, research in technical and professional communication, and core competencies of professional and technical communicators.
